Syllabus

Here is a suggested introductory syllabus based on simple saṁskṛt ṭīkās.
  1. tattva-bodhaḥ -- introduction to standard vedānta terminology and concepts
  2. aparokṣānubhūti, ātma-bodha and vākyavṛtti: introductory texts with simple tīkās published in the prakaraṇāṣṭakam / prakaraṇadvādaśī compilation by the Mahesh Research Institute
  3. gītā with hanumān's paiśāca bhāṣyam
  4. 8 primary upaniṣads with amaradāsa's maniprabhā gloss
  5. māṇḍūkya-kārikā with bhāskarānanda's prasāda gloss
  6. chāndogya and bṛhadāraṇyaka upaniṣads with nityānandāśrama's mitākṣarī gloss

On the prasthāna texts, the commentaries were selected on the basis of the following:
  • They follow śaṅkarācārya
  • They are short and use simple language
  • They avoid pūrvapakṣa discussions
  • They are accepted by the tradition
  • Editions are available / in-print

With the exception of the paiśāca bhāṣya, the commentaries fulfill all of these criteria. I have not come across any reference to the paiśāca bhāṣya in traditional teaching. However, it clearly follows śaṁkara, and even uses his exact word-construction and sentence-construction in many places.
